The Plastic Problem

Plastic essentially lasts forever and unfortunately most of it is only used once. After initial use, most plastics end up in landfills and even worse—the ocean, which is ultimately harming our planet and its inhabitants.

A Danger To Humans

According to National Geographic, a new study in the journal Environmental Science and Technology says it’s possible that humans may be consuming anywhere from 39,000 to 52,000 microplastic particles a year. With added estimates of how much microplastic might be inhaled, that number is more than 74,000. So what happens to plastic once it’s in your body? Scientists still aren’t quite sure about the amount of microplastics a body can tolerate or how much damage they do. Recent studies have hypothesized that, over time, the cumulative effect of ingesting plastic could be toxic. Different types of plastic have varying toxic properties. Some are made with toxic chemicals like chlorine, while others pick up trace amounts of chemicals like lead found in the environment. A build up of these toxins over time could impact the immune system and upset gut balance.

A Danger To Wildlife

Plastic has been found in 100% of marine turtles, 59% of whales, 36% of seals and 60% of seabird species that mistake plastic for food. When an animal ingests plastic, it can cause life-threatening problems, including reduced fitness, nutrient intake and feeding efficiency—all vital for survival.

A Danger To Our Planet

The Ocean Conservancy explains that by 2050, scientists predict that the ocean will contain more plastic by weight than fish. Every year, 8 million metric tons of plastics enter our ocean on top of the estimated 150 million metric tons that currently circulate our marine environments. Whether by plastic bags or plastic straws winding their way into gutters or large amounts of mismanaged plastic waste streaming from rapidly growing economies, that’s like dumping one New York City garbage truck full of plastic into the ocean every minute of every day for an entire year! And that much plastic is bound to have an impact on ocean ecosystems.
